A MOMENT.

On October 15th 2010, I put on a concert of my own music, showcasing pieces i had composed over a series of time. The pieces were simple snapshots of different times in my life, and the concert was called Cinematic....

I am a 'Moments' kind of person. The moment in a movie when the plot thickens and the hero realises what they must do, as we in turn realise the enormity of what is about to unfold in the coming scenes. The moment an athlete wins gold for your country and you feel proudly connected to both them and others. That moment in a song where the melody does that little thing that makes your heart wilt with shear emotion. The moment you look up into the starry evening sky and witness the magnificent beauty of what you see. The moment when you're speeding along an open country road under a warm sun, with your best friends by your side on an exciting adventure. I don't just remember these kinds of moments, I hold them dear. They enrich my soul, and make me feel alive. The happy, the heart wrenching, the mournful, and the epic alike are of equal significance to me. In fact, as I write these words and recollect on past moments even as tiny and insignificant in time as they were, they remain as little signposts that have actually helped to shape the course of my life.

On the 24th of November 2012 I will be presenting the third instalment of my cinematic concert series entitled 'A Moment'. My ensemble and I will be endeavouring to explore different 'musical moments'; the happy, heart wrenching, mournful and epic alike, as we immerse you in a world we create with sound and light. Hopefully it might end up being another one of those little signposts....

I invite you to set aside the date in your diary, and keep up with the latest info HERE, as well as some exciting ways to get involved in making the night memorable. I really hope that you can join me and others as we create a moment together.

From the start to the middle.

It's been a while. Sorry. Let's move on.

Since my London adventure I have been around Oz twice with mr Corby; the first as part of the Groovin The Moo festival (which was a bundle of fun), and the second for his national 'Winter' tour (which was really incredible and beautiful). It was actually quite a rush (at GTM) playing in front of around 10,000 people each time. If you watch the video, you can get a little sneak peek at what it was like.

Since returning home from all the craziness I have kept myself pretty busy. As well as trying to re-establish contact with all my long lost friends (by that I really mean hang out lots!) I've been doing some writing with a talented young soul singer named Jess Wilson, and working with talented harpist Ingrid Zibell on some exciting new material along the cinematic/orchestral line. In fact, I am planning on premiering some of this new music at my next concert later this year. Keep your eyes (and ears) pealed HERE (just click the 'Like' button) for more info on this, as well as some exciting extra bits that shall be included in the lead up to what hopefully will be the best instalment of my 'Cinematic' concert series to date.

Well that's it for now, but I am looking forward to sharing my new music with you, and I really hope you enjoy it when you next experience it!

London - Week 4

It's been a little while since I last posted, mainly due to there being not much going on. Rehearsals, chilling, going out, meeting new people, seeing some shows were pretty much what we have been up to over the last while.

We have, however, taken up an addictive collective habit in heroin use. haha, just kidding. Our actual habit though, is playing a card game called Shithead (sorry for the swearing kids, but that's what it's called!). It has become quite an intense contest and we have started a tournament, with our scores being added up each day to go towards an end-of-trip total. Needless to say, it has become the focal point of our lives for the time being.

We had a show last night. It was at a place called the Bowery, with a capacity of around 150, but when I arrived at the venue I was surprised that you could squeeze that many people into such a small room! The show went well; Matt was solid as a rock, and we played a new tune which was very well received, so that was a relief!

The rest of our week shall consist of rehearsals and a recording day on friday. I'm looking forward to friday, because we will get to lay down our near finished ideas.

On another note, I've had a little bit of time over the last week to work on some of my own musical ideas which has been good. Stay tuned, as I shall be announcing another of my 'Cinematic' Concerts soon!

*If you wish to be kept updated on this blog and all my other musical adventures, please 'Like' my Facebook music page HERE

That's all from me though, for now at least. Peace.

Week Two

Hello,

The last few days consisted of sight seeing, drinking beer (because that's what you do when you're in London), and you guessed it, more rehearsals.

This is the Shard; the tallest building in London. They are feverishly trying to finish it for the olympics so the marathon runners can run up and down it or something.

Tower bridge. Pretty massive and actually an incredible piece of architecture for when it was built.

This is where we had dinner tonight. A friend of ours is a member in this kinda 'Club' thing, and it's pretty dang trendy if you ask me!

So far in the rehearsal studio we have pretty much finished 2 songs, and have many more ideas that are constantly circling around our brains, taunting us and keeping us from sleeping at night. Not really, but there are HEAPS of really good ideas constantly coming up. The aim now is to get a few more songs 'finished' and then hit the studio to record some demos of them. I think I said it before, but i'm pretty darn excited about the sorts of things we are writing here. It's just really cool to be working with awesome dudes who are as excited as me about making music!

Anyway, that's all I have to say. Bye!

Friday fun times

We began today with a fairly slow start that included breakfast, English style:

Rode a double decker bus:

Got to the rehearsal studio (how many names do you recognise?):

Looked at architecture:

Oh yes, and we also rehearsed. We set to work on some completely new material, followed by consolidation of some of our other ideas. All in all though, it's been a pretty relaxed friday. We shall be having some well deserved drinks soon, and will let our hair down (aka PARTY!) this evening, so I am not going to write anything else!

STUDIO DAY 2

Day 2 in the studio was quite productive. Did pretty much the same thing we did yesterday. Wrote. Jammed. Refined. Got a bit excited.

We also had a little meeting with Matt Emsell (Matty's manager) about plans for the next few months into next year, and it was also a little bit exciting. All I will say is that there are some really cool things in the pipeline, and it's pretty mind boggling that I will be a part of them! Just picture world domination being step 1 of the process! HA!

Below are pics from day 2:

T-Bone being highly productive; on the floor and on his phone!

Matty playing through a beautiful Orange amp (Orange is the name of the brand for all you non-musicians) with crazy awesome reverb, and his voice going through an old school Alesis digital rack reverb unit. It smooths out his off notes....

A blurry picture of the rehearsal studio's 'Ludwig' drum kit that isn't really a Ludwig at all; it's a kinda crappy Mapex, but I have been beating it into shape! And if you were wondering, the answer is YES, I do play keyboard and drums at THE SAME TIME....Not really, but seriously I do....

Again, if anyone has any questions they would like to ask, feel free to email me, or reply to this post and I shall be happy to answer, unless those questions are not about what a great photographer I am.

CREATION

Today Matty, T-Bone and I started working on completely new material towards the first full length 'Matt Corby' release. We probably ended up jamming out 4 new ideas in the space of an 8 hour jam, and are only into really rough arrangements of each so far, but it is a good start I think. It's quite exciting working together on Matty's stuff, basically from scratch, because we are each bringing our different elements and influences to the table, and it is already sonically showing.

I think we all got a glimpse of what we were capable of achieving together when we hit the rehearsal studio for the 'Into the Flame' EP, where for example, the track 'Brother' was workshopped as a group. Although Matt had the initial skeleton, we were each able to add our own flavours and create something that we couldn't have done without each other being in the room. I am definitely a big believer in 2 brains being better than 1 when it comes to creativity, in any form for that matter...So if you are wondering what the new sounds are that are coming out, (without saying too much) in my view it's almost a progression of thought from the 'Into the Flame' EP. however, we are definitely not restricting ourselves to what we have done in the past, but are each being very experimental in our approach, which I think is a healthy thing when developing new material. So I already can't wait to get in the studio to start bringing these songs into fruition!

The next 2 days are also designated rehearsal days, so I am looking forward to the momentum we gain from constantly working on new material, and the excitement that generates. It's an honour and incredible privilege to be working with, in my honest opinion, one of the world's most exciting emerging talents (Matty if you're reading this don't get a big head! HA!), and to be invited onboard for his creative journey is a rare and truly beautiful thing. I definitely feel as if the work I have been putting in as a composer and arranger of my own material has been leading up to this point, so it's good to put my money where my mouth is, so to speak, and be involved in potentially creating something that captivates a really wide audience.

I'm interested to hear all your thoughts on any of this, and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask away!

Bedtime now. Tomorrow awaits!
